He came from the same town in southwestern Virginia as did the Carter Family, and attended school with Joe, June, and Jannette Carter. Even though he lived the majority of his life in the Boston area, he always dreamed about his home "up the holler" in Hiltons, Virginia. He also loved the song "Red River Valley.
